Flynn Congratulates Victorious Former XCC Champions

Flynn Congratulates Victorious Former
XCC Champions

Detroit, Michigan - Xtreme Cagefighting Championship President Matt Flynn would like to congratulate all the former XCC Champions who scored a clean sweep of victories at Friday's King of the Cage Live HDNet! televised "Bad Boys II" event at Cobo Arena in Detroit.

Former XCC Welterweight Champion Daron Cruickshank defeated Jason Holmes via split decision. Former XCC Middleweight Champion "Bad News" Ben Lagman scored a TKO 1 over Angelo Popofski. Former XCC Lightweight Champion Eric "The Monster" Moon stopped Dominic Deshazor in just 12 seconds and former XCC Middleweight Champion Caleb Grummit took out Anthony Smith in 36 seconds.

"The end of another school year is approaching and I looked at this card as a graduation ceremony for many of the guys who got their start fighting on my amateur events," explained Flynn. "These guys all have what it takes to compete at the highest levels and they did their XCC roots proud."

The XCC is Michigan's premier MMA organization, hosting high-quality amateur and professional events nearly every weekend in locations all over the state.

Flynn, who worked closely with King of the Cage President Terry Trebilcock in matching fighters for this card, says the fact that Detroit hosted a pay-per-view event of this calibre is a graduation for the State of Michigan as well.

Flynn, with the help of Cage Combat MMA boss Greg Ahrens, hosted the first two sanctioned professional events in the history of Michigan. "A year ago, events like this weren't even legal and now we had a pay-per-view downtown with some of the world's premier MMA fighters. Detroit is now officially a place for world-class cagefighting."

With the help of Flynn, Moon, Cruickshank and Lagman have all now signed multi-year contracts with the King of the Cage organization.

Glenn Griffin Gives Pontiac Crowd a Show

By MARVIN GOODWIN
Of The Oakland Press

PONTIAC — They’re probably still looking for Bradley Decoe, who did a disappearing act at Saturday’s amateur mixed martial arts card at the Crofoot Ballroom. When Decoe’s name was called to fight, he was nowhere to be found.

“He was all gloved up,” said promoter Matt Flynn. “He took a pair of gloves and left. He got scared.”

That left his opponent, Marty Quarles of Waterford, all ready to fight, but with nobody to fight.

Still, the show went on for a lively crowd which cheered their favorite amatuers on the scheduled nine-bout card which turned to eight after Decoe’s departure.

Glenn Griffin of Pontiac did his part to inspire the masses, scoring a third-round victory over Devon Brown, who could take the punishment no more.

Griffin, who weighed 155 pounds, not only yielded 15 pounds to Brown, but was violently slammed to his back three times in the first round, poked in the eye and was slugged in the back of the head, a no-no in mixed martial arts.

“That’s the second war I’ve had,” said Griffin, who’s picking up a following with his camouflage trunks, tattooed torso and crowd-pleasing style. “I just wanted it more than he did. (And) I like to do it. It’s the best thing I’m doing is fighting. And I’ve got all my people here.”

Brown had the advantage the first round, but the stubborn Griffin turned the momentum in his favor with well-placed punches and kicks the rest of the way. The end came at 59 seconds of the third round when, after a couple of uppercuts, Brown had enough.

James Lee, a former King of the Cage champion, has taken over training for Griffin.

“I like him because he’s got a heart,” Lee said, “and he’s got raw talent.”

There were more fireworks, too. Josh Kish of New Boston needed only 14 seconds to KO Donald Whitfield in their heavyweight match. “Another one bites the dust,” said Kish, shortly after his debut. “He dropped his hands (and) I hit him with a left-right ... right to the chin.”

As Whitfield strode by to congratulate him, Kish also showed his human side.

“Keep your hands up, homey,” he smiled.

Eugene Jehl of Walled Lake, a 125-pounder, opened his amateur career with a victory which appeared as if it wouldn’t come.

Dominique Crayton of Flint attacked him with punches, then slammed him to the canvas. But Jehl, with his legs wrapped around Crayton’s neck, slowly worked his way into position for the submission triangle choke hold, which came at one minute of the first round.

“I was just looking to escape and grab anything I could,” he said. “I saw the opening for the triangle and I knew it was there.”

In other matches, Devon Thompson of Flint beat Jomar Baez of Waterford; Jerome Otler of Flint scored a first-round TKO over James Milner of Waterford; William Frost scored a first-round TKO over Curtis Corvin of West Bloomfield and Darmel Roby of Flint needed only 45 seconds to KO Nino Rihan of Sterling Heights.

In the main event, Steve Gatto of Shelby Township won on a first-round victory over Steven Carter in a light heavyweight match.
